Telecom and Datacom

Photonics and (fiber) optics have driven Telecom and Datacom applications into the high-speed digital gateway we experience today. To enable the future of tomorrow’s networks, we believe more optical functions should be integrated, allowing new advanced methods without added complexity and cost. We enable this potential with our modules based on hyper-spectral (400-2300nm) Photonic Integrated Circuits, where the windows S-band and C-band, around 1500 nm, are the most widely used. This region has the lowest attenuation losses for the current optical fibers and consequently achieves the longest range.

LioniX International designs and manufactures customized modules for photonic OEMs and system integrators. The PIC modules are based on our photonic integration technology and can manipulate laser light by splitting beams, combining beams, controlling intensity, phase, mode size, and input-output configurations.

Our PIC modules are used in different types of products in Telecom/Datacom applications such as: fiber-to-the-home splitters, coherent communication systems, and broadband 5G wireless applications, using integrated microwave photonics. With experience in beamforming applications for the aerospace and avionics industry, we furthermore focus on mobile wireless solutions for high-speed public transport and military or civil operations. Our proven technology satisfies broadband requirements of astronomical research, in particular for large area antenna systems.

Continuous development and the creation of new product demonstrators have resulted in several integrated systems, using elegant modulation schemes combined with unique filter properties. With these manufactured functional models, we have further broadened the application base for our proprietary silicon nitride platform TriPleX®.

Microwave photonics and high frequency (1-100 GHz) signal processing on a Photonic Integrated Circuit provides huge benefits over conventional free-space optics systems, or RF-electrical designs, in terms of performance, size, weight and power consumption. A high level of on-chip integration enables new features and functions in  Telecom/Datacom applications such as beamforming, wavelength multiplexing, filtering and quantum computing.

In many Telecom/Datacom applications one or more (tunable) lasers are used to transport broadband digital or analog signals over long distances. Still, most of these systems are built using discrete optical components. Our Photonic Integrated Modules are beneficial for these applications as they increase robustness, reliability and compactness and open the route to ever-increasing bandwidth requirements.

Hotspot 4K Video Streaming With Integrated Photonics
